The Stigma of Mental Illness | Sam Cohen | TEDxYouth@SRDS

In this courageous talk, Sam Cohen – a high school sophomore – implores us to treat mental illnesses as the illnesses that they are, and to move forward as a culture in an accepting and nurturing way in treating these illnesses. In her talk, she explores what it means to be mentally ill in our society.

Sam Cohen is a high school sophomore finishing up her first year here at SRDS. She is an avid photographer, having graduated a four-week photography program at the New York Film Academy and hopes to one day use her photographs to make a difference in the world. More than anything else, she loves dogs. Here today at TEDxYouth@SRDS, Sam will discuss the stigma surrounding mental illness, and what each of us can do to change things for the better.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

  1. The thing with Mental illness is understanding you have a problem and seek professional help….
But when grown males try to convince themselves that they are Female and don't Seek treatment. This becomes a problem.
    That's a example.

  2. Mental health is important and getting help is too, but this kid lost me when she started making demands about what I can and cannot joke about. Go watch South Park and get over yourself. Sincerely, a disabled veteran with plenty of mental health complications.

  3. More brainwashing of society, stop feeling sorry for yourself, the pharmaceutical companies and the government created mental illness to sell drugs and control the population

  4. Its not my business for details from your Anxiety. You're already managing an illness I subordinated to Bipolar 1. Not too late to manage both. Please stay with this crusade in company with a long and happy life. You have already served yourself as well as the rest of us
    Exceedingly well. Be very well!

  5. My former friends stigmatize mental illness. They are so toxic. I am glad I blocked them. People who do that are just uneducated. I have been practicing self-care ever since.

  6. I believe the Stigma of Mental Health, has been pushed so bad in our world, that it's is used to shut up lives and people who have an illness, and including the Privacy Laws whatever nation or country you are in, just DOES NOT WORK. Nobody on this planet, SHOULD be ENFORCED against their own WILL, to just tolerate other families issues. I am not talking about those who HAVE genuine Mental issues, but THE IDEA OF MENTAL HEALTH as a whole shouldn't be used against other's in a family and ENFORCE PRIVACY LAWS down a family's throat, and just accept and tolerate what is, is in fact ABUSE, to other's in a family situation.
FOR EG I cannot say or FORCE someone to NOT TALK ABOUT relationship issues, and MAKE SOMEONE SHUT UP about that!!!! That's is in fact Psychological and Emotional ABUSE!, to I have said to that person!!!!!

Just wondering is anyone going through issues like that, in their own household at present??? I am going through this with a family member in a household at present, and being told to shut up and just tolerate his "mental disorder", but not an assessment for many years.

    Matt
