Although, I personally have never had an issue with the VA Health Care system (I go to the VA Medical Center in Loma Linda, CA), other than the time it takes to process disability compensation claims, I do know that issues do exist for certain. I have also learned that with the VA, self participation is paramount. You need to study the VA, look everywhere for suggestions, short cuts, contacts and etc. Ask a lot of questions and by all means learn about the Patient Advocacy system within the VA, these people get things done as far as my own experiences go and that of others who I know. I am sure though, that each facility is different. Here at Loma Linda, mental health is a big issue. The new clinics they have include a walk-in mental health clinic. Their people are really good. My personal therapist is fantastic and really cares. Anyway, here is something that might help you all I hope. A year ago I met the US House of Representatives Chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee. His name is Mark Takano. It was when I was given a Certificate of Congressional Recognition as a Vietnam Veteran at a ceremony for the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. Anyway, he seemed like a super nice guy and maybe one who can get stuff done. His staff helped me with an issue involving obtaining some active duty medical records which were helpful in my own claims. Contact him! Here is his contact info. And good luck all!
Its true, star program is in shambles ,you stand up miss an appointment or even argue with a doctor you got put on fiduciary status. Its sad there. You get judged by the staff for so much….remember its a union job.

I don't use them anymore they are full of abuse and mistreat veterans
