I’m currently working with a couple of clients who all get stuck in this pattern of anxiety, try to keep super busy to avoid feeling anxious, and then burn out and end up depressed. I’ve seen this pattern in my family and in a lot of my clients, so from what I can tell it’s a pretty common way that anxiety turns into depression. In this video, you’re going to learn how to identify and replace this pattern with a more helpful, sustainable approach. So let’s take a look at each of those stages.

About Me:
I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life’s direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/comeuntochrist/believe

For 8 months I was stuck, if only I knew how to get out, so much pain could be prevented
Feel so sick from this and no idea id experience it this bad
Really I face it, at school days I tried hard and my marks improve. Society also tells us if you want to improve your life work hard. So I push myself (in my head its like running faster to win). Then always result are not in my side and rest of the cycle repeats… I'm stuck. is this my normal or what is the normal ? Some people don't do anything, have no growth related thinking. And I want growth & fall the cycle.

Is this a cycle? Or just capitalist reality?
Did your client lose her job? Drop out of school?
I'm feeling the physical affects of my anxiety. It's horrible
You saved me with this video. Just could not go through another cycle … now Im prioritising as my first step. Thank you
Fear or not being good worked too well for me as motivation for 6 years and just 3 years ago it turned into disaster that I’m still trying to recover from and fight
It may be powerful but it’s dangerous and can get out of control real quick
its also common that sometimes youre just trying to be more busy, but your depression makes you hopeless and this coupled with the anxiety of whether youll accomplish those set tasks, makes you want to do nothing, just leading to a mental burnout, because you believe that you can do nothing and you just admit that it will take a lot of effort for you do a little thing that is a piece of cake for others. does anybody feel that way?
