Mental health and resilience – the secrets of inner strength | DW Documentary
Around one billion people struggle with stress-related illness globally – and that figure is rising. What protects those with good mental health? Is their resilience innate? Or is the ability to withstand chronic stress and crisis something that can be learned?
In the search for answers, the film visits some of the leading figures in resilience research. The filmmakers also interview epigeneticists and neuroscientists. In the largest European resilience center in Mainz, Germany, researchers conduct a long-term study to explore the mechanisms deployed by people who enjoy good mental health despite stress and crisis. In southern France, the film meets Boris Cyrulnik, a pioneer of resilience research. His credo: when it comes to resilient behavior, it’s not just down to us – society and politics also have a responsibility to create appropriate conditions for stable psychological health. And the film tells the moving story of two families united by tragedy: following the violent death of their two sons, who were friends, they struggle to find their way back to some semblance of normal life.
Our experiences, our environment and our genes – all influence our powers of mental resilience. Resilience isn’t a magic word or a promise of happiness, but a life-long learning process.

Your hard work really shows, amazing video!
Such a good documentary.
And actually shows what Europe is about. Researching, finding answers for people's problems.
And here we have banned İnstagram in Turkey, inflation is sky high and we just dont face the real problems people have.
This really felt good, thank you all.
What help me strong is having hobby, cooking, talking to stranger, being friendly to my neigbhor.Eat ,sleep, and pray.
This is one of the best documentary on the internet on mental health & resilience 🩷Not only is it educational but also truly inspiring & thought provoking 🔓📖Kudos to the team behind this amazing documentary 🥳
Optimism and being always (most of the time) optimistic is the key to resilience. I got severe mental breakdown or severe overwhelmed brain condition due to the abuse of some psychiatric drugs, but as soon as i took control after the abuse, optimism helped me to get through it. I am feeling good while writing this comment. C'mon, we are humans, if we are able to think, then we are able to think positive. Get that like the only option you have…
I was thinkin like i wish i knew this thing that much as of now as these 7th std children but at the same time i am grateful to know it now rather than never!
This is an excellent documentary👍. I would say faith in God works perfectly for my society to stay resilient in the everlasting crisis we are in.
This was very helpful. Thank you.
Life-saving video
Impressive and logical explanation like always. 🎉
Stand with underdog .. Jai ho ❤
I can't watch. Too depressing.
My wife ran off with my fishing buddy and I miss him a lot.
The correlation between mental illness and depression is quite irrelevant : perfectly sane people can experience a breakdown too.
Resilience: suffer, keep suffering and dont complain. Wear a mask a pretend youre happy.
Why does the narrator keep saying crisees?
We are turning into heartless apes
Thank you DW for covering this important topic
Factors such nurture, childhood, environment we grow up or live in, gender, race, religiousity, social status, Economic issues, health issues, educational level can have impact to stress response.
Lost all your clothes?
This video really resonated with me. Losing my dad in 2009 at such a young age was a devastating experience, and I had to dig deep to find the resilience to move forward. It's true, you can't even imagine how strong you can be when being strong is the only option you have. I learned that inner strength isn't about being invincible, it's about recognizing our vulnerabilities and finding ways to cope. For me, connecting with nature, journaling, and seeking support from loved ones were essential for healing. It's a journey, and there will be ups and downs, but remember, you are not alone. There are amazing resources out there, and seeking support from a mental health professional can be incredibly helpful. Hugs to all of you guys!
Am I the only one who recognised the riff at 26:24 – it is Sting’s Shape of My Heart right?
I don't like the research designs of these scientists. They anchored their studies in comparative psychology using animals as test subjects. At least, they should have employed Phenomenology as a research method.
Such a good video 💜💜💜
Psychology is so bogus. If there's actually an imbalance of chemicals in the brain then there should be able to be a test for what a baseline normal is like there is for every other body system
If I am doomed to fail, then I will not fear failure, but refocus the efforts towards gaining something from the experience therefore, despite the failure, I still gained something
😮😢
Hope
If all else should wither and die,
May the streams of hope never run dry,
Let hope flow freely within,
To the roots of the soul tucked in deep,
For if hope dies,
Nothing ever lived.
A poem from my book, Suicide Notes before you go. I write to build my resilience. I'm almost always anxious due to the very unstable childhood I had. I'm not yet there, but I'm well on my way to building a resilient mindset.
My love and faith in God Jesus 🙏
IT WERE Under my viewpoint a such as well done Documentary.
I understood every Researcher's approuch of the mainly causes ,of Which Could be triggering harsh issues on dealing with in our future lifetime in order to prevent Mental Diseases.

Be stubborn, rude and selfish. That's why criminals never get depressed.
My relationship with Jesus Christ is my source of strength.
It is easy to be hard on yourself when things are not going well. However, it is important to practice self-compassion.

"you move through life with a state of awareness* yes sir, a recent real life lesson I've learnt, after all the commentary compliments on reselince I've heard to my character I know have a true awareness today from this documentary. 1 tutor once told" what you have is something you can't pay for" that my friends is resilience. I get it and god bless the family that lost their children God bless the professors who's research become a program for mother's and children and thanks YouTube. Impeccable and important genius document. I learnt stimulus and exposure therapy today and how to deal with noise that trigger on purpose or intentionally. Postivity is key 😊
I reflected on the professors childhood, faced with a death threat just because he had no family and he found a passion to open kindness and chose research, the story of being a lost life in society and written off, resonates and to take a profession that helps children then make them I guess a repeat version of their childhood and do what adults tell them to do because of threats of fear, like the elephant skit.. I admire and honor such work from my point of view, true hero of his' the professor ' own story and for humanity, that's what I resonated with in this documentary sadness creates resilience. 😊
for short, healthy brain make me strong…
