The surprisingly dramatic role of nutrition in mental health | Julia Rucklidge | TEDxChristchurch
NOTE FROM TED: Please consult with a mental health professional and do not look to this talk for medical advice as the intersection of mental health and nutrition is still an emerging field of study. We’ve flagged this talk for falling outside TEDx’s curatorial guidelines because it oversimplifies interpretations of legitimate studies. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In this critically important talk, clinical psychologist Julia Rucklidge explores a range of scientific research, including her own, showing the significant role played by nutrition in mental health or illness.
Julia J Rucklidge, PhD is a Professor of Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. Originally from Toronto, she did her training in neurobiology (McGill) and Clinical Psychology (University of Calgary). Her interests in nutrition and mental illness grew out of her own research showing poor outcomes for children with significant psychiatric illness despite receiving conventional treatments for their conditions. For the last 6 years, she has been investigating the role of micronutrients in the expression of mental illness, specifically ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, anxiety and more recently, stress and PTSD associated with the Canterbury earthquakes.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

My OCD was about to go into full swing with that background clicking, poppy-scratchy sound!
Im just here to say how massively impressed I am to find 28 Ghosts IV of NIN as the intro song of this video
More than hope, this made my blood boil in anger. Western civilization has taken away everything good for our health: fresh food; vegetables and fruits and meat and fish not loaded with poisonous pesticides and hormone-mimicking chemicals and toxic heavy metals; fresh, clean air; dark nights for a good night's sleep; a slow life; free time; social connection; sun exposure; sunrises and sunsets (because in most cities, it's hard to find a horizon); an environment free from harmful electromagnetic radiation that we swim in 24/7 for the sake of being "connected" but which penetrates our brain and skin and ruins our sleep and focus; healthy soil; a life full of walking and physical work, a life in nature, instead of nature being a commodity and an "escape". And then they give us more chemicals when we are sick to "cure" us from the effects of the chemicals in our food, water, and air. I don't know about you, but I would undo it all for my health. I would give up all convenience and connectivity and luxury and modernity for the sake of clean air and clean water and clean food and a restful night, after which one doesn't need mechanical and chemical aids to start the day. We are not only killing the planet- we are killing ourselves in the process.
AMAZING! 😍
Thank you for the insight 🙏 🎉
Bless this woman who tells the truth!
Nutrition and rest are the key to good mental health. The medical model is all about ££££ and not health.
Basically for mental health :
*EAT HEALTHY
*HEAL FROM LIFE
*GET USED TO BEING ALONE
*SLOWLY YOUR BRAIN WILL HEAL
YOUR BRAIN IS THE COMPUTER OF YOUR BODY – THIS IS THE SYSTEM UPDATE EVERYONE NEEDS… I KNOW BECAUSE I BEEN DOING IT NEARLY 2YRS & ITS VERY HARD TO GET
'BACK TO YOUR NEW NORMAL'
GOODLUCK – ITS HEALING TIME GUYS 🥰🥰🥰

I agree nutrition is vital, as is exercise and fresh air. I will say as a therapist I have noticed that clients I see with ADHD have experienced some level of trauma in childhood. If during pregnancy we are in a state of overwhelm/anxiety the chemicals that circulate also affect the baby’s brain growth putting baby at higher risk of anxiety/ADHD.
Not as easy as it seems to keep healthy food on the table.
I wish the speaker had elaborated on how to obtain these high levels of micronutrients. Taking a large number of vitamins everyday is not very palatable. Yes we need to fresh, unprocessed foods, but we also probably need to supplement that with more micronutrients—and exactly which micronutrients do we need and in what dosages? Some big questions—-
WHAT A EXCELLENT VIDEO I 100% AGREE! THANK YOU!
Such an important message! On another note: so the hippies were right
I wholly believe in this lady's lecture as a mental health clinician & someone with multiple autoimmune disorders. I keep a whole food diet and avoid processed food items.

Optimizing nutrition is a safe and viable way to avoid, treat, or lessen mental illness.
– Semmelweis advised hand washing to prevent childbed fever, similarly, nutrition can prevent mental illness.
– Poor nutrition is a significant and modifiable risk factor for the development of mental illness as seen from the increased rates in psychiatric illnesses in children over the years.
Questioning the effectiveness of medication-based treatments in mental health
– Despite the widespread use of medications, rates of disorder and disability are not decreasing as expected.
– In many cases, medications show short-term effectiveness but can worsen outcomes in the long-term.
Nutrition plays a significant role in mental health outcomes
– Research shows that reducing or eliminating antipsychotic medications can improve long-term recovery from schizophrenia
– Studies demonstrate that micronutrient supplementation can lead to better outcomes for mental health conditions like ADHD and depression
Micronutrients show significant improvement in mental health
– -1.1
– The study revealed that participants on micronutrients had less impairing ADHD symptoms compared to those on placebo.
– The positive benefits of micronutrients include significant improvements in bipolar disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms.
Nutrition plays a vital role in mental health improvement after environmental catastrophes.
– Providing micronutrients in appropriate doses can significantly enhance mental health outcomes post-catastrophe.
– Research demonstrates micronutrients' effectiveness in reducing aggression, treating various mental health conditions, and being cost-effective.
Omega-3 fatty acids reduce risk of psychosis
– Adolescents receiving fish oils had 80% lower risk of converting to psychosis compared to placebo group
– Dietary patterns play a significant role in mental health, with Western diet linked to higher depression risk
Nutrition plays a crucial role in mental health.
– Genetics, gut health, and medications influence nutrient absorption and effectiveness.
– Prioritizing lifestyle factors and nutrition can lead to better mental health outcomes.
Nutrition plays a critical role in mental health.
– Children should learn to cook and understand that food doesn't have to come in a packet. Schools should reevaluate their lunch menus and consider the impact of rewarding children with processed foods.
– Eating well and appropriate additional nutrients can improve mental health. Society needs to pay attention to the research showing the contribution of suboptimal nutrition to the epidemic of mental illness.
I have taken Solgar VM75 and later VM2000 off and on since 1972. I helped me. Also Nordic Naturals Omega threes. Extra D3 and Magnesium supplement. Buy a (good) juicer like Acme 1000 or 5000. Juice carrots and especially beets. Try Kretchmer toasted wheat germ on your cereal. It's crunchy. It's nutty. It's delicious. It really classes up a sliced banana. It's goid for you. Eat only whole grain bread and not as much. Studies have shown that people who eat three or more pieces of fruit per day are less likely to die of all causes by a factor of seven. Don't panic. Go organic. Best of luck to everyone. ❤ P.s. I have really enjoyed how easy, inexpensive and super delicious it is to make your own Greek salad. (You can live off of the darned stuff.) Just Google the recipes and read a few that have high stars. Also making your own croutons from sun dried tomato bagels tastes like pizza!! Yay!
I just learned about molybdenum deficiency in broccoli- the soil in Wales has deficits. Vertical farms have to be careful, but it does save water.
I wish I could like this more than once. I can tell you from my own personal experience she is 100% correct.
She’s got causation mixed up with correlation
I totally agree with you! Let thy food be your medicine, your medicine be thy food! Whole food plant based diet is the best way to eat!
Thank you for this presentation of SCIENCE! Keep talking some sense into these stubborn, quack doctors who dismiss anything holistic!
Good
Not only is the health benefit great for mental health, but cooking and shopping is also good for your self esteem, it is a type of self care that is good against depression

God bless. I am so much better on a better diet.
