Access to mental health services a growing problem in Canada

One in five Canadians experience a mental health issue each year — according to the Mental health Commission of Canada — and 7.5 million Canadians are currently living with a mental health issue or illness. Advocates are pushing for changes in the way government allocates dollars for publicly funded mental health services.

  1. It's hard. No matter what party is in power this isn't a talking point or an issue that will get a buzz so its never addressed. It's scary. So many in my family and friend groups have tried and given up or are still trying to get help. It's not available. It's not getting better and I'm terrified

  2. 12-18 months… wow that would be nice. I have been trying for over 3 years yet still can't anyone to call back.
The government is ran by morons. MB

  3. These numbers are skewed and the Alberta Government and Alberta Health are flat out lying!
Alberta has the highest number of suicides per capita in Canada, and flat out refuses Albertans without $ access to mental health. All Health Care transfer payments should be frozen to any province that refuses to provide access to professional mental health practitioners. Not a student from a Seminary College who plays with vulnerable people to get a grade, and actually increases the number of suicides. In Alberta they have 'peer support', other mental health patients attempting to help those who are suicidal while dealing with their own neurosis. They have Access Mental Health which leaves clients on a two-year waiting list to see a Psychiatrist once every two months and then passes them on to someone who is neither a professional Psychologist nor Social Worker. Or, the Distress Center, who tells anyone with family issues to throw their kids onto the streets, which is also why Alberta has the highest numbers of homeless youth! Canada is one of the worst countries in the world for any form of access to Mental Health (except maybe the middle east), and Alberta is the worst province in Canada for attempting to access ANY form of help…but; the coroner's offices in Alberta have more clients due to suicide than all other deaths put together, including influenza, cancer, heart disease, and COVID put together! It's been over 20 years since 2017 when the joke of "The Canadian Mental Health Commission" was formed and promised all Canadians Access to Mental Health. To date, they've done nothing but steal taxpayer dollars!

  4. A return to RC spiritual beliefs and support would resolve much of the mental health issues. Want to be cured, return to Christ and His best advocate, Mary, saying the rosary.

  5. Half a year later, this is still an issue… when people reach out for clinical treatment / services, it is usually when it's really bad. Imagine struggling, reaching out, then having to wait longer. Suffering longer… and making the matters worse. Also, how come family mental health has not been reported on in the media in depth?

  6. Have you ever heard of the BounceBack program? It’s FREE for Canadians and covered by the Ministry of Health. They use cognitive behavioural therapy for Canadians experiencing low to moderate anxiety and depression.

  7. Psychiatry is a pseudoscience a marketing campaign not science. Canada has some of the worst human rights violations by psychiatrists in the world and nothing is ever changed.

  8. I filed a discrimination hotline complaint within my company (Stantec) for my disability, anxiety. This resulted in my approved pay cheque being cut with no reason as to why and still waiting. I've lost 17lbs in 2 weeks due to this case. Help!

  9. Thats not the only problem. If you go through public health, you also get 50 mins with a psychiatrist for assessment, no follow ups whatsoever, and then a GP is tasked with deciding how to treat you. Absolutely failing Canadians… why do you think there are so many people on the street? Disgusting. I should have stayed abroad.

  10. Our system for mental health is laughable because I’ve been on a waiting list to talk to someone to get a therapist since November they were supposed to get back to me for the appointment to discuss what kind of therapy I’ll need
