Community-based mental health care: the Power of Purpose
“What happens to a person when they are treated as less than human? When they are treated as a tranquilized problem that needs to stay docile and become more prisoner than participant?” This powerful poem, written and narrated by Scottish author, Erin May Kelly, sheds light on the human rights violations that are still far too common in mental health services around the world. The poem also explains what mental health care in the community can and should look like, and the tremendous difference that care provided with respect for people’s human rights, and that is focused on recovery, can make to people’s lives.
The poem was commissioned for the launch of new WHO guidance on community mental health services that are based on a rights-based approach.

Where else should i retreat but my own house.
When you, as a patient, are put as a price tag. You come and you go, cause only symptoms got be tucked in while you are still bleeding underneath. 6 years of screaming goes by, i said all the symptoms i have, even my childhood full of trauma, even the CFS i developed after my experience of a new perpetrator again, nobody hears or believes you, institutional trauma and parental betrayal trauma – again. I am silenced by GP, town hall, mental health service only provides social anxiety "you are the problem" i already told them 'it is not enough, i have C-PTSD with every writed letter i gave them. Now, all alone i sit in the shadow, nowhere to go, cause i cannot ride a car, i cannot ride a bike cause of my head full of chaotic thoughts and concentration what is lost and lethargy.
After so much years, i do not know where to go anymore, do not know what to tell, i shut-down again. created high blood pressure cause i am full of stress, overstimulation and still CFS and other complaints (echo in my head: i already told them 'childhood trauma can cause CFS, especially when you fell mostly in the 'freeze response''), they pile up, so that you become more internally locked up because details become too much. I am alone, they isolated me, cast out of society. – Netherlands
