Developing cultural competence is a process, not an endpoint. Features of a culturally competent health practitioner include understanding the concept of culture and how it can influence emotions. Clinicians must demonstrate a willingness to explore culture from the perspectives of those from diverse backgrounds while leveraging appropriate strategies for working with such individuals.

This presentation will outline a philosophy of awareness and individualization and how it can be an asset to quality care.

Learning Objectives:
– Discuss patient-centered philosophies and individualized care
– List considerations in relation to cultural diversity and cultural competency affecting healthcare and substance use disorder treatment
– Discuss the key aspects of cultural competency
